MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Relying on a pair of late rallies, the No. 19 Georgia College baseball team (35-15, 15-9 PBC) swept a doubleheader from No. 19 Armstrong Atlantic (33-15, 14-10 PBC) 6-5 and 6-2 Saturday at John Kurtz Field. The Bobcats pull of the series sweep from the Pirates thanks to a win Friday night as well.
Game one resembled a boxing prizefight, as the lead shifted back and forth throughout the contest. The final exchange came in the seventh. With GC up 5-4 into the top half, Pirate third baseman Drew Walker tied it up with a solo home run to right. In the bottom half, the Bobcats responded.
Shortstop Tanner Funk (Kearney, Mo.) pulled a single down the left field line. Funk advanced to second on a wild pitch, and after another out, first baseman Benton Yaun (Marietta, Ga.) lifted a double to right center for the 6-5 lead.
Sophomore righty Taylor Hart (Colbert, Ga.) came in to get the final six outs, picking up his first career save. Fellow reliever Matthew Robinson (Hull, Ga.) got the win (3-1) tossing a pair of innings, allowing just one hit and one run, fanning two.
Funk finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, adding his second home run. Rightfielder Shawn Ward (Evans, Ga.) was 3-for-4, driving in three and scoring twice while tagging his seventh home run of the season. Centerfielder Patrick Daugherty (Kennesaw, Ga.) was 2-for-5, scoring once.
Game two was blown open by a four-run sixth inning, as Daugherty and third baseman Travis Echols (Lawrenceville, Ga.) both hit two-run home runs.
Daugherty finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run, while Echols added two hits in four trips, plating two and scoring once. Designated hitter Jim Moreland (Suwanee, Ga.) scored twice and finished 2-for-4 and Funk added a 2-for-4 day, scoring once.
Reliever Ryan Parson (Madison, Ga.) evened his record at 2-2, tossing the final four scoreless while scattering five hits and fanning two.
The Bobcats await seeding for the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament, set for May 8-12 in Columbus, Ga. Multiple teams still have conference games left to play.
