ALBANY, Ga. – Georgia College Baseball (20-13) picked up their 11th non-conference victory Tuesday against the Albany State University Golden Rams (7-27). The Bobcats broke through the Rams' defense in the fifth inning while Georgia College maintained an ironclad defense through the game, earning a 7-0 win.
The teams remained scoreless for the first four innings of play. In the fifth inning, freshman Wesley Wommack (Monroe) plated two runners with a single to centerfield. The following inning, Matthew Miller (Escondido, California) sent in two runs with a triple. Miller did not have to wait on third for long because the next Bobcat batter, shortstop Brandon Benson (Loganville), sent him home to score with a single to center. A scoreless seventh passed before Benson continued to score, this time with a home run that put two more runs on the board for Georgia College. One final scoreless inning wrapped up and the Bobcats left Albany with another victory, 7-0.
Benson held the top spot for the Bobcats in today's game when he finished the game with three RBIs and two runs. The junior shortstop went 4-for-4 at bat with a home run and a double to his name. Miller and Wommack tied at two for RBIs, but Miller had the only triple of the game.
Starter Conner Alford (Macon) gave his most impressive performance this season against the Rams. The senior collected 10 strikeouts during his seven innings of pitching; the second double-digit strikeout performance this season after Charlie Hecht's (Johns Creek) 10 against Rollins College March 25. Hecht faced 25 batters and only gave up six hits while on the mound.
The Bobcats will return to John Kurtz Field to host No.20 Lander University for a three-game weekend series. The first contest is scheduled for Friday, April 8, at 6 p.m.
