AUGUSTA, Ga. – Georgia College Baseball (31-16, 19-11 PBC) picked up their final win of the regular season and swept the Augusta University Jaguars (29-19, 17-13 PBC) with Sunday's 11-4 win. While the teams kept it tied up in the first four innings, the Bobcats surged ahead to claim their final victory against the Jaguars.
Shortstop Brandon Benson (Loganville) put the first run of the game on the board with a first-inning home run past center field. The Bobcats added another run with a homer from Tanner Giesel (Naperville, Illinois). The following inning, Matthew Miller (Escondido, California) earned his second RBI of the game when he plated a run in the third. However, the Jaguars kept pace with the Bobcats and the game stayed tied through the scoreless fourth inning.
Georgia College broke the tie in the fifth stating with a single from Benson. Designated hitter Wesley Wommack (Monroe) sent in two runners with a single to right field before Clayten Ayres (Kennewick, Washington) plated the final run of the inning. After an uneventful sixth, Miller rounded the bags from a long ball sent over the center field wall. The eighth inning passed without a change to the scoreboard before Giesel sent his second home run of the game over the heads of the outfielders. The Bobcats left the field with their third win of the series after the final game of the regular season, 11-4.
Right fielder Miller led the team in scoring against the Jaguars with four RBIs to his credit. Benson, Giesel, and Wommack each picked up two and Ayres rounded out the score with one.
Reliever Bradley Spinner (Roswell) earned his second win of the season after pitching for five scoreless innings against Augusta. During his time on the mound, he struck out five Jaguars while allowing just five hits.
The Peach Belt Championship, hosted by Francis Marion University, is scheduled to begin Wednesday, May 11. The top eight teams will play against each other at Sparrow Stadium in Florence, S.C. Visit GCBobcats.com to follow the Bobcats throughout the championship.
