Season Comes to a Close for #1 GC Baseball at NCAA Regional, 10-6

2018 Georgia College Baseball

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The No. 1 Georgia College Baseball team (44-12) saw its amazing season come to a close in a 10-6 loss to No. 2 North Greenville University (45-9) Saturday at the NCAA Southeast Regional at NGU.

The Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Regular-Season and Tournament Champions, Georgia College amassed 44 victories, the most by the storied program since 2007.

"I'm so proud of these guys, they make you proud to be a Bobcat," said head coach Jason Eller. "They've got a Peach Belt Regular Season Championship, two PBC Tournament titles, and done it in the classroom as well with a 3.20-plus in both semesters. It's going to be a tough ride home, but when we stop to reflect on it, these guys will realize what an awesome job they've done representing Georgia College."

In a back-and-forth affair that was fitting of the top two teams in the nation, it was the top of the eighth that provided the final go-ahead score for North Greenville. The Crusaders added three more in the ninth to push it out of reach.

Senior first baseman Matthew Miller (San Diego, California) was 2-for-5 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in another. His triple got the offense started in the first, as they took an early 3-1 advantage after one. Shortstop Cal Gentry (Perry, Georgia), second baseman Nate Schmal (Cumming, Georgia) and centerfielder Logan Mattix (Loganville, Georgia) each tallied two hits, Schmal also driving in a run with a single in the first.

The loss brings a close to the season for the Bobcats, a year in which they went 44-12 with the most PBC victories since 1998, and the first back-to-back PBC Tournament titles since 1998 as well. The Bobcats put eight on the All-PBC Teams and five on the All-Region squads. Charlie Hecht (Johns Creek, Georgia) was named Region Pitcher of the Year, and Mattix Region Player of the Year.

Amazing careers have come to a close for Hecht, Mattix, Miller, Schmal, Mike Warren, Caleb Slaughter, John Davis, Trevor Guthrie, Wesley Wommack, Brendan Holler and Brandon Purcell.
