ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Georgia College softball team (3-7) split action in the Eckerd College Spring Invitational Sunday, rebounding from a 7-3 loss to Barry University (7-2) to overtake Saint Leo University (5-4) by the same score.
Game one saw the Bobcats jump out to an early 3-0 lead, as all three runs scored off sacrifices. In the first, Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) singled, stole second, then moved to third on an out, scoring on a sac bunt.
In the fifth, Kristen Humphries (Columbus, Ga.) singled, took second on a wild pitch, and moved to third on an Okvist single. Humphries would score on a sac bunt. Dani Gallucci (Orlando, Fla.) then drove home Okvist with a sacrifice fly.
Barry responded in the bottom of the fifth, ripping seven hits and scoring all seven runs. The inning saw a pair of two-run doubles for the Bucs.
GC junior Gallucci (0-2) took the loss in 4 2/3 innings, allowing six runs.
Game two featured the Bobcat offense, as GC pounded out 13 hits for their seven runs. Humphries was the brightest of the stars, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI at the designated player spot.
Junior Michl'le Hull (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and sophomore Kelsea Martin (Dacula, Ga.) each went 3-for-4 against the Lions, Martin scoring twice, while Hull scored three times and drove in two. Gallucci also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Freshman Erica Bell (Fayetteville, Ga.) benefitted from the offensive outburst to get her first career win (1-1), tossing 6 2/3 innings of relief, fanning three and allowing just two runs. Down 1-0 heading to the bottom of the first, the Bobcats got three runs in each of the first two frames and cruised to the win.
