Burnett and Bell Stifle Knights, Bobcats Sweep Doubleheader

by Matt Dalby, sports information graduate assistant

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (5-7) used a pair of stellar pitching performances from senior Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) and freshman Erica Bell (Fayetteville, Ga.) to sweep the Saint Andrews University Knights (4-8) Wednesday afternoon at the Peeler Complex. The duo held the Knights scoreless en route to 2-0 and 10-0 victories, respectively.

In game one, Bell (2-1) was virtually flawless, dicing up the St. Andrews lineup for five strikeouts in a complete game shutout. Bell walked just two and allowed a pair of hits, picking up the second victory of her young career.

A two-out, two-RBI single from sophomore Kelsea Martin (Dacula, Ga.) in the bottom of the sixth inning would prove to be the difference in game one. Martin was 2-for-3 in game one with a pair of singles and a stolen base.

Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Mikayla Sparks (Macon, Ga.) would score the go-ahead runs, each adding a hit on the day.

Burnett picked up right where Bell left off, carrying a no-hitter into the final inning before allowing a leadoff double.

She went five strong innings allowing just the one hit while striking out five to pick up her second win of the year.

The GC offense exploded in game two with eight different Bobcat players recording a hit. Dani Gallucci (Orlando, Fla.) led the charge going 3-for-3 with a double, home run, three runs and one RBI.

Freshman Frankie Walls (Dahlonega, Ga.) chipped in with two RBI and a run in a 1-for-2 showing.

Georgia College will look to carry the momentum into the weekend when they travel to Decatur, Ala. for the Charger Chillout beginning Friday, Feb. 17 at 2:30 p.m. The Bobcats will play six games in three days from Friday through Sunday.
