Okvist Swipes Record, Bobcats Sweep Lynn 9-3 and 7-1

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (15-11) out-dueled the Lynn University Fighting Knights (1-23) at the Peeler Complex Thursday night, taking both games 9-3 and 7-1.

In game one the Fighting Knights jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after a Lauren Garceau double plated two runs. The Bobcats added one of their own in the bottom half of the first. GC exploded for seven runs in the second frame, aided by a Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) single that scored Caitlin Duvall (Douglas, Ga.) and Dani Gallucci (Orlando, Fla.). Senior Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) drove in two of her own with a double to the gap in right center.

Okvist finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, three runs scored and one stolen base. Natalie Bellantoni (Oviedo, Fla.), Mich'le Hull (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and Burnett all had two RBI apiece. Sabrina Chandler (Covington, Ga.) pitched six innings allowing three runs on three hits, fanning three.

In game two the Bobcats put three quick runs on the board in the first frame. Okvist reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, and then stole second breaking the single-season stolen base record with her 33rd of the season. Burnett then singled through shortstop plating Okvist. The Bobcats would add two in the second and two more in the third. Erica Bell (Fayetteville, Ga.) threw a complete game, scattering five hits and only allowing one earned run.

Okvist finished 6-for-8 on the day with six runs scored, four RBI and two stolen bases. Burnett finished 3-for-7 driving in five and scoring one.

Okvist stole two more bags Thursday night and is a perfect 33-of-33 on the base paths this season, passing Leigh Jacobs (1995-1998) on the single-season stolen base list. She has a combined 57 stolen bases in her first two seasons placing her third on the all-time list and just four behind Aundrea Baker (2003-2006) for second place.

GC softball continues their homestand hosting Peach Belt Conference (PBC) foe Georgia Southwestern State University Sunday, March 11 in a doubleheader set to start at 2 p.m.
