Okvist Represents GC Softball on NFCA All-American Team

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Sophomore Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) of the Georgia College softball team took the year’s highest honor, as she was recently named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) First Team All-American.

Okvist was a master thief this season, hitting .413 with 52 stolen bases in as many tries, a school record. She scored a team-best 54 runs and drove in 19. Her stolen base mark was a single season record for GC and top-five in the history of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC).

The Bobcat centerfielder gives GC softball seven NFCA All-Americans in school history, the most recent being first teamer Mandy Chandler in 2009. Okvist and Chandler are the only two first-team selections in school history. The Bobcats have put just one other outfielder on this list, that being second-team choice Sherquita Bostick in 2008.

The Bobcats showed much improvement in 2012, finishing 25-24 with a 9-11 PBC mark, good for seventh and a PBC playoff spot after holding the top spot in the conference standings early in the season. GC put three players on the all-region teams, including an All-American now in Okvist.

The NFCA is the professional growth organization for fastpitch softball coaches from all competitive levels of play. The idea for a softball coaching association first developed from discussions at the National Collegiate Women's Softball Championships in the early 1980s. Although mostly collegiate coaches comprised the organization's membership in the early days, today's college coaches are joined by high school and travel ball/club coaches, umpires, as well as other fans of fastpitch softball. In 1997, the Association's membership reached the 2,000 mark, and today there are more than 4,300 members.

The Georgia College Department of Athletics, two-time winners of the PBC Commissioner's Cup, sponsors 10 varsity athletic programs at the NCAA Division II level. As a Division II program, Bobcat Athletics prides itself on balancing the life of the student-athlete, evidenced by the teams' multiple appearances in post-season competition as well as documented academic success and community-service involvement.
