Bobcat Comebacks Come Up Short in First Day of UNA Invitational

FLORENCE, Ala. – The Georgia College softball team (8-8) dropped both games in the first day of the University of North Alabama hosted UNA Invitational. Both games were close, as the Bobcats fell in game one by a score of 4-2 to Drury University and then came up short against Union University 5-2.

In game one Drury struck early, scoring three runs in the first two innings. They added another run in the fifth inning as Panther leadoff hitter Stacy Razo hit a home run.

Senior Dani Gallucci (Orlando, Fla.) answered with her own bomb in the sixth inning, her third of the year. Three batters later, sophomore Kristen Humphries (Columbus, Ga.) doubled home junior Kelsea Martin (Dacula, Ga.) for the second run of the inning. The rally stalled there and the Panthers would hold on for the 4-2 win.

After dropping the first game of the day, the Bobcats were back in action against the Union Bulldogs.

Freshman standout Marisa Boyette (Marietta, Ga) went five plus innings for the Bobcats, holding the Bulldogs to four runs. All four runs scored against Boyette came uncharacteristically through the long ball. Boyette entered the game having allowed only a single home run in 44 ⅓ innings.

The Bobcat offense was held in check by Kelly Robey of the Bulldogs, as she went six innings without allowing a hit and only allowing a single unearned run.

The Bobcats put together their second comeback rally of the day in the top of the seventh inning, as Gallucci led off the inning with a walk. She followed that by stealing second base and eventually coming around to score on a Humphries sacrifice fly. The Bobcats would bring the tying run to the plate, but the rally would go no further.

Georgia College continues action at the UNA Invitational Saturday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. Eastern for another two games, first taking on No. 24 University of Alabama-Huntsville and then the University of Wisconsin- Parkside.
