CARROLLTON, Ga. – Despite scoring first, the Georgia College soccer team (6-7-2) couldn't answer three straight by Christian Brothers College (8-5-1) Monday in a neutral-site matchup at the University of West Georgia.
All four goals in the contest came indirectly from long passes, with freshman Anya Mancinelli's (Atlanta) strike in the 26th minute being no different. After a booming punt from goalkeeper Jessica Catapano (Alpharetta) changed fields quickly, the Bucs' defense failed to handle the ball for long, resulting in a breakaway for Mancinelli. She fired it home for the 1-0 lead on her fourth goal of the season.
Ellen Garner provided the equalizer in the 41st minute, taking a cross by Camilla Rodrigues from the left side that scooted behind the defense. The goal was Garner's second of the season. The Bucs pushed the offense in the first half, out-shooting Georgia College 13-4.
Two very similar plays provided both of CBU's second-half strikes, as Rodrigues lifted a pass from the edge of the midfield circle, finding Mariana Tonelli for the 2-1 lead. Tonelli's strike was her fifth of the season. Lauren Magdefrau pushed the match further out of reach in the 72nd minute, getting her first goal on a similar play from midfield by Gabrielle Pilgrim.
The Bobcats flipped the offensive pressure in the second half, out-shooting the Bucs 14-8.
Catapano and Ashlee Graham (Decatur) split the game in goal, Catapano making seven saves in the first half and Graham adding four more in the second.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Oct. 24 at 5 p.m., playing host to the University of Montevallo. The match will serve as Senior Day for Bobcat soccer.
