MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Soccer team (3-5-2, 2-1-1 PBC) picked up its second-straight shutout Wednesday, topping Francis Marion University (3-5-1, 0-4 PBC) 3-0 at Bobcat Field.
The two teams reached the half scoreless, and although the Bobcats out-shot the Patriots 9-3, the possession was about even.
Junior Kia Jie Jacobs (Atlanta) broke the scoreless tie in the 53rd minute with her second goal of the season. Classmate Cassie Balzano (Douglasville) split three defenders with a beautiful pass to Jacobs, who fired a shot into the left side of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Balzano herself doubled the team advantage, scoring in the 84th minute. Classmate Sophia Bonser (Tyrone) sent a pass from the defensive half deep down the right side for Balzano. The Bobcats' leading scorer slipped one defender and then scored off the outside of her right foot.
Junior Becca Morris (Marietta) capped the scoring with a long-distance strike, gathering an attempted clear for the Patriots and firing away from about 25 yards out in the 85th minute. The goal was her first this season and fourth of her career.
The Bobcat defense posted its second-straight shutout, as freshman goalkeeper Kate Richardson (Marietta) made four saves for her second career shutout.
Balzano's goal gives the dynamic junior seven this season and 16 in her career, tying Ally Barys (2015) for sixth in school history.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. hosting Albany State University.
